Our glimpses of the villain Vecna in Weird things Season 4 posed a threat that rivals the strength of Eleven (Melle Bobby Brown), as he appears to not only be a physical threat, but also possess supernatural abilities. Given that the series’ previous threats were more brutal in nature, fans had a lot of questions about how Vecna would enter the new season, and his relationship to the Upside Down, Hawkins, and other characters in the series. Fortunately, the first volume of season four provided insight into the character’s origins, with those episodes now streaming on Netflix.

For much of the season, Vecna appears sporadically in the Hawkins and kills a number of victims using telepathy abilities to contaminate his victims in tormenting poses, before returning to the Upside Down. The reason he appears to be involved in calling Eleven is because the pair crossed paths many years ago, as they were both subjects of Dr. Brenner (Michael Modine) at the Hawkins Research Facility.
Thanks to a series of flashbacks, the audience learns in Episode 7 that Vecna was originally an organizer who looked after the Eleven youth before the events of the series’ first season. The pair form a friendship, which leads to an orchestrated attempt to help Eleven escape, which leads to her using her abilities to remove the implant in the neck of the system that weakens his powers. The organizer then goes on a rampage at the research facility and kills several other people who are being tested for his abilities. Then he reveals that, with all the others getting numbers instead of names, he’s Dr. Brenner, the first test subject at the facility.
The organizer then goes on to reveal his name is Henry Creel, who moved to Hawkins with his family when he was a young boy. Henry is fed up with humanity and begins to devise a way to use his telepathic powers to find freedom, which he does by killing his mother and sister with his abilities, crimes for which his father is blamed and imprisoned. This act led to Henry’s hospitalization, and eventually he was transferred into the custody of Dr. Brenner to become one.
Young Eleven and One have a showdown with the forces of telepathy, apparently resulting in Henry’s murder, though he is actually exiled to the Upside Down. Henry’s time in The Upside Down disfigures his body in horrific ways, seeing him during his years in the underworld devising a plan to continue terrorizing Hawkins and possibly achieve his initial goal of eliminating humanity.
As fans of the series know, villains earn nicknames based on threats from Dungeons & Dragons, which is why our heroes refer to Henry/One as Vecna.
Weird things Season 4 – Volume 2 debuts on Netflix on July 1, which could solve more Vecna-focused narrative themes.
